Editing in the Browser

Published July 07, 2026

Opening a document

Click Open next to any document in your Files list to load it in EmpireVault's built-in editor - word documents, spreadsheets, presentations, Open Document Format files, and PDFs all open the same way. It opens in a new browser tab, so your Files list stays right where you left it.

Autosave

Changes save automatically as you work - there is no separate save button - and the editor's top bar shows the current save status. Close the tab whenever you are done; there is nothing extra to save first.

One editor at a time

Office allows only one person to edit a document at a time. If someone else already has it open for editing, you can still open it to view, but editing stays locked until they finish. It becomes editable again automatically once they are done.

Editing PDFs

PDFs open in the same editor as everything else. You can view them, add annotations, and fill in form fields - a PDF is not forced into a view-only mode, and the same one-editor-at-a-time rule applies as it does for any other document.
